Mike and I began cooking Wednesday dinner in about 2001, after John, Robert, and Ali had finished college and had moved to Washington. We wanted a way to get together with them with no pressure, so Mike said "We'll cook dinner on Wednesday nights. You invite your friends, we'll invite our friends. The only rules are (1) you do don't have to say in advance if you're coming, (2) you don't have to bring anything, and (3) you don't have to clean up.." It worked. We generally have between a dozen and 18 people. Alcohol and conversation flow freely. Generations mix easily. Alums who have moved away from Washington are welcomed warmly on their return.. Newcomers are advised to be charming. Wednesday dinner has become a focal point of our lives.
